Recovery Room
The staff at Children’s Hospital of Illinois recognizes the importance of children and their families being together during their hospitalization. The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is where the child’s recovery begins and where parents can be of great help in comforting their child. Therefore, it is offered but not required that a parent or legal guardian may be with their child while in the PACU. In order to be part of this program, the child must be 12 years old or younger.
When the child’s surgery is done, parents can be with their child in the PACU while he wakes up. Until then, parents are asked to remain in the surgical waiting area until they have spoken with their child’s surgeon either by phone or in person. Parents may also request to use one of our pagers so they may leave the waiting area to take a break, visit the chapel, or get something to eat.
