Parents with Pagers
Each year at Children’s Hospital of Illinois, children and their families undergo 4,000 surgical procedures. Children’s Hospital has recognized the need to provide parents with pagers, so they know when their child’s surgery is done or if their physician needs to speak with them.
By providing pagers, we can:
- Comfort parents and family members
- Communicate more efficiently and quickly with parents
- Decrease use of overhead paging system
If parents would like to leave the Surgical Waiting Area for a period of time, they can ask the Surgical Waiting Area hostess to assign them a pager, in case they need to be reached. The hostess can then contact them within the hospital. Our system allows parents to find solace in a quieter, more private place such as the chapel or eating area.
Pre-Operative Tours
The Child Life Department at Children’s Hospital of Illinois offers pre-operative tours for patients and families. The free tour is given by one of our Child Life specialists and is strongly recommended because it can:
- Answer questions
- Decrease anxiety for both child and family
- Offer hands-on opportunity to learn and explore
- Provide information
The tour is also a good time to pre-register children for surgery. Families and patients can visit areas they will see the day of the surgery, including an operating room (if available).
