The Genetics Clinic provides genetic services including diagnosis, testing and treatment to families and individuals in central Illinois and its surrounding communities. Genetic consultation and evaluation by a medical geneticist is available for children and adults with or at risk for genetic conditions including:
- Birth defects such as cleft lip/palate, congenital heart defects and neural tube defects
- Chromosome abnormalities
- Galactosemia
- Huntington disease
- Muscular dystrophy
- PKU
Consultation and evaluation is also available for individuals who have a family history of mental retardation, developmental delay, hearing loss, vision loss, short stature or multiple congenital abnormalities of unknown etiology.
Genetic counseling is available which includes explanation of the underlying cause of a particular condition, risk of recurrence in future children and information regarding prenatal screening and testing. The genetic counselors can provide individuals and families with information regarding specific genetic diseases as well as make referrals to support groups and organizations.
Referrals are welcome from physicians, nurses, social workers, other agencies and individuals themselves.
