The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology provides consultative and continuing care to children with potential or established endocrine disorders on referral from a primary care provider.
Problems appropriately referred to the endocrinology services include:
- Thyroid disorders
- Disorders of sexual differentiation, sexual development or puberty
- Growth disorders
- Disorders of calcium metabolism, diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus or other disorders of energy metabolism
Common conditions, such as short stature and obesity, should be referred when the primary care evaluation has suggested the possibility of an endocrine cause. In concert with the Diabetes Resource Center, the division provides comprehensive self-management training to families of children with diabetes mellitus.
Non-urgent appointments can be made by calling the University Pediatrics Subspecialty Clinic at (309) 624-9680. When the need is urgent (e.g. congenital hypothyroidism, thyrotoxicosis, new onset diabetes) the primary care provider should contact the pediatric endocrine physician on call through the Physician Access Line at 1 (800) 231-7257.
Optimal care is facilitated when the referring provider sends all relevant records such as growth charts, laboratory and X-ray reports and reports of other consultants. These records may be mailed to Pediatric Endocrinology, 320 Armstrong Avenue, Peoria Illinois 61603, or may be sent with the patient.
