The Division of Emergency Medicine at Children’s Hospital of Illinois provides comprehensive emergency as well as trauma care for children injured in Region II. It is also the only tri-county children’s hospital that offers pediatric trauma surgery subspecialty service. Children’s Hospital is the first state-designated Pediatric Critical Care Center, due in part to the high quality pediatric emergency services. This recognition, which is the highest recognition from the Illinois Department of Public Health, requires special pediatric equipment, supplies and continuing pediatric training for physicians and nurses.

Annually, there are more than 15,000 pediatric admissions to the ER. Approximately 100 of these are pediatric trauma patients. Approximately 70 pediatric patients are admitted to Children’s Hospital through the Emergency Department each month. Children’s Hospital of Illinois welcomes the opportunity to cooperate with other trauma centers and EMS providers in assuring the availability of the highest quality of pediatric care.

Board-certified emergency medicine physicians, experienced in the treatment of pediatrics, staff children’s Hospital Emergency Department 24 hours a day. The surgical suite is located on the third floor, only seconds from the Emergency Department. An operating room is staffed and immediately available for trauma at all times. Burns are managed by Transfer Agreement to a Burn Center.

Transport to Children’s Hospital of Illinois is accommodated by ground and/or air. LifeFlight is available for air transport and responds within minutes. It is staffed by advanced practiced RNs and emergency medicine residents. Ground transfers are accomplished by a Critical Care Ambulance staffed by advanced RNs and paramedics.
