Children’s Hospital has many locations in the hospital where a child may be cared for depending on the level of care and needs of the child.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 35-bed unit attended by six neonatologists and many nurse practitioners specifically trained to care for the most critically ill premature infants until they are strong enough to go home.

Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit (NIC) is a 10-bed unit that provides care to premature infants who have grown strong enough not to need intensive treatment but still requiring some level of monitoring before it is safe for them to go home.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is an 11-bed unit managed by five pediatric intensivists (critical care physicians) and specially trained staff to treat children who have been severely injured, have a chronic illness, or have undergone complicated surgery.  Children seen here have been able to be at home prior to being admitted.

Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit (PIC) is a 10-bed unit which is managed by the intensivists but do not need the extensive level of care of the PICU but are still required professional care before going home.

General Pediatrics is a 27-bed unit on two floors managed by Pediatric Hospitalists who are trained pediatricians to care for children with complications requiring an overnight stay in the hospital.  Patients here could be treated for severe dehydration to viral infections or may need to recover from a surgical procedure.

Newborn Nursery – in conjunction with OSF Saint Francis Medical Center this nursery provides a place for newborns to be monitored or seen by specialists before heading home.
